Join us for this 7-day Insight Meditation retreat with world-renowned Insight Meditation teacher, speaker and author, James Baraz and his wife, Jane Baraz. Having taught meditation since 1978, James is one of the pioneering teachers who has helped spread the practices and principles of mindfulness in the West, both through his work as a founding teacher at Spirit Rock Meditation Centre in the San Francisco Bay Area and through his book Awakening Joy and online programme of the same name. He also leads retreats and workshops internationally with his wife, Jane, who has been a mindfulness practitioner since 1976 and was on the Spirit Rock Board of Directors for 8 years. Jane teaches Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) at University of California San Francisco and Mindful Self-Compassion at Spirit Rock.
The Mind and the Heart are not separate. We'll take these 7 days of silence to explore and put into practice various skillful means to access naturally relaxed, open hearts and clear quiet minds. Through these expansive states insights into how we become unnecessarily distressed and how we can find inner peace and ease naturally arise. These insights heal, uplift and ultimately free us.
This silent retreat will offer instructions to develop mindfulness, combined with training in loving-kindness and compassion, through a daily schedule of silent sitting, walking, dharma talks and practice meetings with teachers. If you are new to Insight Meditation retreat practice or experienced, this is an excellent opportunity to spend time with teachers who have dedicated their lives to this practice.
ABOUT THE RETREAT
This will be a traditional teacher-led silent Insight Meditation retreat running over 7-days. It will focus on the principles and teachings of mindfulness that help develop our natural capacity for well-being and reconnect us with an inner sense of contentment and joy.
The peaceful countryside setting of Healesville will be the backdrop for a nourishing and rejuvenating stay where we can dedicate time and space to wholeheartedly tending to ourselves, and practice being with our experiences as they arise. Through periods of sustained silence the retreat will provide an opportunity to deepen your mindfulness practice and create space to connect with your inner wisdom with the support of a group and the guidance of experienced teachers.
It will include both guided and unguided practice periods of sitting and walking meditation, cultivation of heart practices, as well as daily talks on the traditional philosophical basis of mindfulness meditation that are relevant for our practice both in retreat and beyond. There will be time allocated for practice discussions with the teachers during the retreat.
This retreat will be held in noble silence except for interviews and question and answer periods. For beginners, please note that noble silence does not exclude communication in times of emergency or at times when communication is needed to clarify meditation or work period instructions. This will be part of the instructions.
To honour the noble silence we encourage you to complete all your communications before the retreat so that you can fully participate in and enjoy this precious time. We encourage you to turn off your mobile phones and other devices for the duration of the retreat. The retreat manager will be available during the retreat if your family needs to contact you.
James Baraz has been a meditation teacher since 1978. He is a co-founding teacher of Spirit Rock Meditation Center in Woodacre, CA. He leads retreats, workshops and classes in U.S and abroad. James is the creator and teacher of the Awakening Joy course(since 2003). He is also the co-author of Awakening Joy, the book based on the course, and Awakening Joy for Kids, and is a guiding teacher for One Earth Sangha, a website devoted to expressing a Buddhist response to Climate Change. James lives in Berkeley, California with his wife, Jane. He has two sons and three grandchildren.
Jane Baraz, has been a mindfulness practitioner since 1976 when she began sitting vipassana retreats. She was on the Spirit Rock Board of Directors for 8 years and helped start the Spirit Rock Family Program. Jane teaches Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) at UCSF's Osher Center for Integrative Medicine. She's also a trained teacher in Mindful Self-Compassion (MSC), which she teaches at the Women's Cancer Resource Center in Oakland and privately in Berkeley. Jane enjoys teaching retreats and Awakening Joy workshops with her husband, James, in California and internationally.
